contents page deconstuctions

The font style is small writing so the editor can fit more detail and information on the page so the reader will know everything that is within the magazine. Using the black writing on the white background makes it stand out more and is easier to read as it is clearer. Bold writing is used for names and the page numbers as these are what people will look for first.

The main colours used are black for the writing, a white background and a blue outline to illustrate where the page is split. On the right hand side the page numbers of the articles are highlighted with a certain colour to show what that article is about (blue=music and green=news).

All the text is placed under a heading. So the heading describes in a brief line what the article is about and the writing underneath explains the heading in more detail.

There are 3 images and these are just small images so that they don’t take up to much room on the page. The images are pictures of artists with their page number underneath to tell the reader which page you will find the article about them on. The 4th image is a bigger image and this illustrates that the article about that artists is more important or is about more interesting than the other images articles.

The date, price and issue number are at the bottom of the page as it is less relevant information as it is made clear on the front cover so it isn't as important as the information about what’s in the magazine so is placed at the bottom of the page to make more room for the contents page.

Having a band index means readers who have only bought the magazine for one or two artists don’t have to spend ages looking for the pages as it says the band name and the page number.
The contents of the magazine are on the right hand side and have numbers next to them which relate to the page number they are on. Having them in their own column makes the layout of the page clearer and easier to read. Also on the contents it is broken down into sections so it is easier to find what you are looking for.
Having a voucher/advert in the magazine intrigues the reader to maybe use the voucher as it allows them to get deals on the magazine.
The use of only a few colours (red, black, white and yellow) means that it isn’t too vibrant or over the top because the colours don’t contradict each other and make the writing and headings stand out

The use of a contents column on the left hand side makes it easier to find what you are looking for also it is split into certain areas such as news or new artists. So if you are looking for something specific you can find it easily because it will be under a heading and have a page number next to it.
Also using a few coulors (black, orange and white) akes it easier to read and makes it less over the top so it is easier to read.
The use of using images means if someone likes the band they will know who is in it and will also know the page they are on because it has the page number within the magazine.

Analysing previous students work

Analysing Previous Student Work

Name of Magazine
Strengths
Weaknesses
Grade I awarded and reason

The bosh

The contents page is structured very well and is easy to read also the colour scheme is good as the colours don’t contrast but make the writing stand out.

A weakness is the use of the colour scheme on the front cover first of all I believe that there is too many colours on the page and contradict each other.
B

QMR

A strength of this magazine is that the layout of the double page spread is well constructed and is easily set out so that it’s easy for the reader to keep up with what’s happening in the interview.
A weakness is that the colours on the front page make the photos look blurry and don’t really work well with the pictures.
C

What have I learned from looking at last year’s student work?

That the use of colours is important in the magazine because a good colour scheme can be the difference between a good and bad magazine. Also taking good photos is important because bad photos means a bad magazine so taking good photos and spending time working on them to get them as good as I possibly can is a thing I will need to use.

How will I apply this to my own work?

I will be careful when I am taking my photos and take numerous copies of the same photo so that I have a wide range to choose from and pick the best photo for my magazine that I can. Also before I finish my magazine I will use a few different colour schemes to see which one is the best and that everything within the magazine is easy to read.

Stage 2 planning

Proposal Form

Describe your idea for the brief: I will be designing and producing a rap magazine that will bring exclusive interviews with a different rapper every week. Also within the magazine will be a chart run down of the top sings and albums of the week as well.
Genre/ sub genre: list similar texts which have inspired your thoughts
The Rolling Stones magazine normally has interviews with rappers and has them on the front cover other than that I had no other inspirations.
Target audience: gender/ age/ characteristics/ behaviour
The gender is both male and female and just relates to if they like rap or not. The age could be any age but mainly between 15-24 year olds.
Normally people who listen to rap are very stylish and keep up to date with fashion and some characteristics are normally a snap back and very low waisted jeans.
Major conventions I will use
Masthead, coverlines, sub headings, images, sub images, columns, adverts/vouchers.
Original images: what/ where/ what
I and a fellow student imitating the stereotypical rap look with a twist.
Photography suite in the college.

Potential difficulties/ Plan B: There are a few small  difficulties that I can think of there all very minimal or not at all the only problem may be the photos not looking the best but that will be dealt with when it comes to it.

InDesign Practice

On InDesign i use a few tools the first one i used was the top button the left hand side which was the arrow. This allowes me to move image's about and also change the size of text boxes and image's. Once changing the size of the image you click the right hand button and go down to fitting then click fit content propotionally.
The sedcond button i used was the capital T on the left hand side which which creates text boxes to write what you want next to the images.

Double page deconstructions

The use of a full image makes the audience drawn to the artists and makes it obvious who the article is about as it’s hard not to notice who it’s about when a full page is used and is right next to the article.
The sub-heading ‘how high’ is an illustration of the smoke coming out of the artists mouth and paints and image of the artist in the readers head about what the artist likes to do in his free time. Underneath the sub-heading is a strapline and this just gives an introduction about the artist and what the article is about.

The use of a few colours (black, white and yellow) is because of a few things. One might be because the artist is wearing a black and yellow cap and that’s why the main coverline is in them colours. The second is his song (black and yellow) so it is a play on words by using them colours also normally artists are related to black and white as there very bland colours that can be used all the time.

The double page spread is quite evenly split it is photo and word led as the image will relate the whole article and you can relate things within the image to the article and words within the article to the image.

There are only 3 columns within the article the first is a introduction about the artist and what he is about. The second is about his autobiography and some major honours he has won. The third is a summary of the article and puts the artist and his life into perspective.
The use of only a few colours as well makes it not to stand out a lot as it will draw attention away from the artrist and the article. The use of red in his name and on his shoes shows passion and that he may have a fiery personality. The blue represents calmness and this contradicts with the red but this could be because the fact he has to personalitites (slim shady and eminem.) The red would represent slim shady who is an angry type of person who does all the wrong things but shows passion where as the blue represents eminem who is the cool headed of the two personalitites.
The image is one image and is the background for the full article and is also a full body image. They have just used a shadow to make the writing stand out and have placed the writing around is foot to ba able to use the full image

The use of a full image will draw the attention to the image and will make it obvious who it is about. The picture is also provacative and will interest readers to read the article to find out what the picture is about. The use of a balck and white picture is to keep the number of colours used to a minimum so that there is not a overpower of colours within the article.
The use of the big letter L and with is in red may apply to her personality and that she is a fiesty character and will intrigue the reader into reading the article to try find out how she may have a fiesty personality.
the use of 3 columns means that that the article is obviously planned and seperated into certain points about her life, career and her pasat and future. Also it will break it up into a few paragraphs so that it is easier on the eye and better to read.

Main task flat plans and written rationale

On my front cover i will mainly use 3 colours black, white and red. The red shows passion and anger that most rap artists have. Black will be used to create mystery and also the artist and his companion on the front cover image will be wearing all balck so it links with that. The white will be used as it works well with the black and red.
For my images the main image will be a short distance but far enough away to get a full body picture of the two people i am using for my photos. The probs will be a pair of sunglasses that the boy will wear to create mystery about him and links with the clolour black as he will also be wearing a black top and black pants. The body lanuage used will be that of making the boy the main focus with the girl next to him but also to draw the attention of the male readers but she will also push the focus onto the boy. He will stand in an upright position whilst the girl will position herself around him, showing him off to the audience.
The text used about the main image will be the main coverline of ' east to takeover west' this is a referance to Kayne East (the boy) over taking Kanye West as the best rapper alive, but also of his ambitions to takeover the music industry. East and West will be in bold writing to make them stand out and to draw the attention of the audince to potentially buy the magazine.
The main image will take up the whole front cover and the main coverline will be 3 quarters of the way down the page to not draw to much attention off the image but also to catch the attention of the reader so that they pick up the magazine to start reading about the new artist.

For the comtents page i have the page numbers and the article names on the left hand side and these will be placed in order of the page number but will be split into what the article relates to (news, music features, reviews.) The two images on the right hand side relate to the second main stories within the magazine. One of the images will relate to the double page spread and the other image will relate to another main story. A advert/ voucher will be in the botton left hand corner to offer our loyal readers a great present for helping to sell the magazine and to entice them to read the magazine again. The masthead will be at the top of the page and this will relate to one of the main images on the contents page to entice the reader to buy the magazine and so that they read the article.

The double page spread is split in to two parts, on the left hand side is a main image of the artist being interviewed and some basic information aout them in the bottom left hand side. On the bottom right hand side of the left side of the page is wha the interview is about and the name of the interviewer. On the right hand side of the page is the interview and this covrs up about two thirds of the page and this includes questions and answers that the interviewer and interviewee have given. At the bottom of the right hand side is what the interview thinks about the interview and their opinion on the artist.

Preliminary task

On my front cover something i could use to improve it for me real magazine would be to just use one main photo so that the focus is more on that photo. The second thing is to use more colours to brighten up my magazine instaed of using just one colour. The third thing is to make my coverlines shorter and snappier to make it better and so that it sounds better to draw the attention of the audience. A use of punctuation is another thing that i need to work on when doing my final magazine so that it is gramatically corretct.

On my contents page it is basically the same things that are wrong with the front cover such as the colour of the writing to make it bolder and to draw the attention of the audience in more. The second thing is to use shorter coverlines to make it stand out more so it is easier on the eye.

So overall i will need to make the coverlines shorter, use better and more colours on both the contents pages and the front cover page.

Provide answers in paragraph form to the questions below that

are relevant to your production.

1.    Are there any potential hazards that could pose a health and safety risk where your photo shoot will take place (trailing cables/traffic/other objects )? I will be doing my photoshoot inside and the health risks are trailing wires which someone could fall over. Other risks are falling objects such as screens or the camera.

2.    What will you do to ensure these risks are minimised? Do a health risk assessment on all possible risks as well as checking before I start photographing to make sure everything is okay and all risks are minimal.

3.    Will the time of day/weather affect the outcome of the photos? Have you allowed for this? The time of the day wont as I will pull the blinds so no natural light can get in to affect the photos.

4.    Have you considered the background to your photos, particularly if taken outside? How will you ensure you will get the background you want? The background I will use is still unclear to me and I haven’t decided but I won’t be taking photos outside though so I don’t need to worry about the outside affecting my background.

5.    Have you considered lighting? What about the ‘problems’ of natural lighting, either outside, or streaming through a window? Will you need to use a flash? Have you considered reflective objects that might spoil the effect? I will pull the blinds so no/ minimal natural light can affect my photos.

6.    Do you need permission to take photos in the place/venue you have in mind? I already have permission to use the room.

7.    Do you need to book time in a room (eg the photography studio)? Wednesday the 12th of November at 1 o’clock .

Photoshoot Planning

Media Studies – Foundation Portfolio

Photo shoot planning document

What emotional impact do you want your photography do have upon the reader and how will you achieve this? The emotional impact I want the reader to have is that of understanding the emotions that the person I am photographing has. I will achieve this by making the expressions easy to recognise and also by making the main coverline relevant to the expressions the person is presenting and that I want to put across.

What personnel do you need? Who are you going to photograph?

I am going to photograph a girl who I haven’t chosen yet and will get someone to photograph me and the girl.

What props will you need?

The props I will need will be some glasses and chains as my magazine will be a rap magazine so I will want to show the typical rap artist within my photographs.

How are you going to emphasise colour? The colours I will be using will be bold colours but won’t be a variety of colours though mainly whites, blacks and maybe a blue or red.

Have you briefed your personnel/models?

No I haven’t as of yet but I will when I see them.

What lighting will you need? Any other equipment? The only equipment I will need will be a camera to take my photographs.

Where will you shoot? Will you need a backdrop?

I will shoot in the photography room and the backdrop is yet to be decided but will be a famous landmark such as the New York skyline or the London eye

Mise-en-scene - Make-up? Costumes? Props?

The make-up will be done by the model themselves and won’t be too over the top. Costumes will just be clothes that fit into the genre of rap and can display the idea of rap though.
